Families Birmingham Magazine is a well established, successful franchise magazine: one of a group of over 40 Families franchise magazines across the country. The Families UK franchise brand originated in South West London in 1990, and gradually spread across Britain. Families Birmingham has been successfully trading since 2011.
The business model is the same for all the editions of Families UK: the target readership is parents, grandparents and carers of 0-12 year old children; the magazines are delivered predominantly through nurseries, pre-schools and prep/primary school book bags as well as to venues frequented by parents of the under-12s; the revenue comes from advertisers who have local events and services targeted at young families (that you have to sell) and from sales to national advertisers (sold by the franchisor’s group sales team); the key costs are printing, distribution and design; each magazine pays a small percentage of revenue to the franchisor in return for their excellent support in the form of a pre-design magazine full of articles and features (which editors may use as a flexible magazine template if they wish – or they can create their own), sales training, advice, etc.
Your main day-to-day job as editor would be to sell the local adverts and to finalise the content for each issue. You can, if you choose, design the magazines yourself – personally, I outsource this service, but other editors do it themselves. The same goes for distribution.
The job can all be done by phone and computer from home. It is 100% suited to highly flexible part-time or full-time working.
